Trichy Temples

Uchi Pillaiyar Temple

The Uchi Pillaiyar Temple was the first temple we visited in Trichy . It is a very unique temple . It’s located on top of a rock fort ! The rock fort is known as Malaikottai in Tamil !

This temple was built by the Pallavas in the 7 th century. We went early morning ( between 6 to 7 am ) and it was very peaceful ! It is a lot of steps but you get stunning views of the city !

Highly recommend a visit to this temple in Trichy .

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple

Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple also known as Sriramgam is a famous temple . My knowledge of it is from Tamil Movies . It is a Vishnu temple . It is a huge temple – the entire temple complex is 156 acres .

This temple is the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world and the largest temple in all of India ! It was built in the 9 th century . There is a 21 day yearly festival that attracts 1 million visitors ( that’s about the same number of people that visit the Maldives in an year ! ) .

The main attraction of the temple is the reclining idol of Lord Vishnu. Once we entered the temple we made our way to this , paid extra to skip the line and see Lord Vishnu . Luckily it was not crowded on the day we went and we were able to see Lord Vishnu quickly .

Definitely a temple to visit in South India ! Photos from around the temple :

Thiruvanaikovil/ Jambukeswarar Temple

Thiruvanaikaval Temple is a famous Siva Temple in Trichy . This was also on my husband’s list of temples to visit . My husband had plans to visit all five major temples in Tamil Nadu .

This temple represents the element of water . The five major Siva temples each represent different element ( water , fire , air , space & earth ) .

This temple again was magnificent to look at . The priest gave us a beautiful flower garland when we were praying. Definitely a highlight to our day .

One to visit if you are looking to visit all the element temples .

Brahmapureeswarar Temple

Brahmapureeswarar Temple is a Shiva Temple with an area for Brahma . Brahma is the god of creater .

There is an in interesting story behind how Brahma came to have an area in this temple . At a time in history Brahma felt he was superior to Shiva since he was the god of creation . This obviously pissed off Shiva so he cut off Brahma’s 5 th head and took away his ability to create !

Brahma went on a pilgramge to all of Shiva’s temples to apologize for his mistake and In the hope of getting his power back . After Brahma prayed at this temple – Shiva gave Brahma his power of creation back ! He also blesses him and gave him his own dedicated area in this temple and told him since he had his faith rewritten here he should do the same for his devotees visiting this temple !

People mainly visit this temple to pray for different paths for their lives ! Definitely – very interesting story behind this temple .
